The area of the Viktualienmarkt is always open, but the market stalls are closed on Sundays and public holidays.
The first booth opens at 5:30 a.m. (Karnoll). Most of the other stalls open between 7 and 10 am. You can find more information about the opening hours of the Viktualienmarkt here: opening hours
The market area is home to around 140 stalls and traders selling fresh produce and specialties. The stalls are either permanent or mobile vendors at the market – the Metzgerzeile (butchers) is also one of the vendors at the Viktualienmarkt.
The Viktualienmarkt is operated by Markthallen München. This municipal company also operates the Elisabethplatz market, the Wiener Platz market and the Pasing Viktualienmarkt. Further information is also available from the Marktaufsicht.
Viktualien is an obsolete term for food. Viktualien comes from the late Latin victualia, from Latin victus “food”. The term “Viktualien” also appears in other words or names, such as Viktualienkeller or Vitalienbrüder. In addition to the Munich Viktualienmarkt, there are other markets in Pasing, a district of Munich, as well as in Castrop-Rauxel and Lünen (North Rhine-Westphalia), Gars am Kamp (Austria), and in Bavaria in Forchheim (Franconia), Ingolstadt (Upper Bavaria), and Straubing (Lower Bavaria).
The Viktualienmarkt is pronounced “Fiktualienmarkt“. The letter “v” is always pronounced as “f” when it comes at the beginning of a word or syllable and is followed by a vowel (Vogel) or the letters “l” or “r” (Vlies, Vroni).
In cooperation with M-Net, Stadtwerke München (SWM) offers free Wi-Fi at the Viktualienmarkt.
The same rules apply at the Viktualienmarkt as in the rest of Munich. Dogs are allowed on a leash at the Viktualienmarkt.
There is a public toilet at the eastern end of the Viktualienmarkt which is open every day between 9 am and 6 pm (Frauenstraße / Westenriederstraße).
The Viktualienmarkt is located in the old town of Munich, on the border with Isarvorstadt. There is another Viktualienmarkt in Munich, located in the Pasing district.
